An LED Lesson: LED Flicker Rate

Ever wonder why the flickering of a light exists? Does flickering of a light occur due to dimming of the light?

Flickering does exist even with LED lights. It is derived from the frequency of AC input. The frequency of your electrical power depends on what your utility source provides. In North America, 60 Hertz is our standard rate.

This means that your lights turn on and off 60 times every second. Essentially translating to 60 times on and 60 times off. It happens so fast that our eyes cannot detect it under normal circumstances. It is an on-off cycle that completes 60 times in every second.

However, the frequency stays the same at the output end of drivers if AC drivers are being used. This is very important to remember in case you are planning to dim your light fixtures and could haunt you when actual dimmers are installed.

Most LED fixtures come with constant current drivers and use 0 to 10-volt dimmers or some with an even better method – the DALI system. The majority of commercial and industrial lighting equipment use DC output to dim and require these types of dimmers.

Residential dimmers are different because they work on line voltage. This could cause fixtures to flicker. Since the portion of line voltage that has been cut (input of driver), is not proportional to the output voltage of driver. There are a lot of times that even dimming steps are not harmonized and buzzing noise is consistent.

A good quality light bulb or fixture designer/manufacturer that who claims to provide a satisfaction to their clients will never sacrifice the quality portion of their product which is a driver. Quality drivers cost more. They are environmentally friendly and are to last for a very long time. By searching for the cheapest priced products, you are welcoming problems to follow through with your purchase.
